Board of Trustees Resolution - June 6, 2020

Whereas Mu Beta Psi’s purposes are to honor those outstanding individuals who have devoted their time and efforts to the musical organizations at the educational institutions of the respective Chapters, to stimulate interest in the musical organizations at the educational institutions of the respective Chapters, to advance music to its proper place as an educational subject, and to actively promote fellowship among musicians everywhere; and

Whereas BLACK LIVES MATTER; and

Whereas Mu Beta Psi recognizes the ongoing and persistent use of police brutality against black individuals; and

Whereas Mu Beta Psi condemns police brutality; and

Whereas Mu Beta Psi condemns the unfair persecution of minority communities by law enforcement; and

Whereas Mu Beta Psi stands with its Brothers who are BIPOC, as we are inclusive of race, religion, sexual orientation, ethnic background, creed, ability, age, and/or sex; and

Whereas we recognize that our Brothers who are BIPOC need additional support at this time; and

Whereas Mu Beta Psi acknowledges that systemic racism exists and needs to be addressed within our organization; therefore


Be it resolved that:


The Board of Trustees will propose training to be provided at least annually for Mu Beta Psi National and Chapter leadership in regards to diversity and inclusion as well as understanding implicit bias; and

Be it further resolved that the Board of Trustees recommends that Mu Beta Psi leadership pursue activities for self-education on racial injustice; and

Be it further resolved that the Board of Trustees recommends that Mu Beta Psi establish a committee to provide recommendations on how we can celebrate diversity and promote equity and social justice within Mu Beta Psi; and

Be it further resolved that the Board of Trustees recommends that Mu Beta Psi Chapters advocate, lead initiatives, and hold standards for diversity and inclusion in music departments and ensembles at the educational institutions of the respective Chapters; and

Be it further resolved that the Board of Trustees recommends that Mu Beta Psi pursue service events that support the BIPOC communities in and around our Chapters; and

Be it finally resolved that the Board of Trustees recommends that Mu Beta Psi immediately produce a public statement reflecting this resolution.
